Tackle It Tuesday turns into Thursday too

I am on a mission!
This house must be de-cluttered and cleaned so I can decorate for Christmas. Since I took on the laundry room Tuesday, today the pantry was the beast to be wrangled. Who would have thought a 4ft x 8ft space could take all day!?! Four years worth of junk piled up had to go!
From the time Cerdwin got up this morning, until I finally gave in, she begged to bake cookies. Finally, after I got the pantry cleaned out, kitchen cleaned up again, we baked Betty Crocker Sugar Cookies.

While I was getting dinner started the cookies were cooling. Of course, Little Miss Impatient was driving me bananas wanting to know when she could put frosting and sprinkles on the cookies.

After dinner was on the stove, I let her start frosting and sprinkling the cookies. Of course dinner was ruined for her since she had to take a lick of frosting after each cookie.

We used Betty Crocker Whipped Vanilla Frosting and two different types of sprinkles.
I must say they turned out to be pretty yummy little treats and I think my little kitchen witch did a great job!

You can find some coupons for the Betty Crocker Cookie Mixes plus other items here:

Dinner was quite delicious tonight too. I used one our favorite recipes from the Kraft Foods/Sam's Club dinner planner.

South-of-the-Border Chicken & Pasta Skillet

2 cups medium-size pasta, uncooked
2 Tyson® boneless skinless chicken breast halves (about 1 lb.), thawed, cut into bite-size pieces
16 oz. salsa (about 2 cups)
10 oz. frozen corn, unthawed (about 2 cups)
4 oz. (½ of 8-oz. pkg.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, cubed
¼ tsp. ground cumin
1 cup KRAFT Mexican Style Finely Shredded Four Cheese, divided

COOK pasta as directed on package.
MEANWHILE, cook and stir chicken in large nonstick skillet sprayed with cooking spray on medium-high heat 6 min. or until done. Add salsa, corn, cream cheese and cumin; simmer on medium-low 6 min. or until corn is heated through and cream cheese is melted, stirring occasionally.
DRAIN pasta; add to skillet with half the shredded cheese. Simmer 3 min. or until heated through. Top with remaining shredded cheese; cover. Remove from heat; let stand 5 min. or until cheese is melted.

After all that, I even managed to soak in the tub to get a little quiet time for myself tonight too!

Thankful Thursday

Last night I talked on the phone with Sabrina, my life long friend, for the first time in several months. Our busy lives don't leave us much time to talk or see each other very often. She doesn't have any children and some of her other friends just do not fit in to my lifestyle. (KWIM?) She does the Facebook thing and sends the occasional chain email, but she not much on internet communication. She is hooked on Farmville. Laughing
Sabrina has a kidney disease that has wreaked havoc on her life since age 12. Cystinuria has left her with 100s of surgical procedures, numerous scars, a lifetime of medications, and more than just the general wear and tear on her body. She hasn't done a good job of taking her medications or taking care of herself. She is getting too old to be playing around with her health, drinking too much, doing drugs, etc.
I was so thankful to hear that she has found a job that she is enjoying and trying to keep the drama out of her life. I am thankful that she is my friend. We have been through some stuff over the years that most friendships wouldn't survive.

What are you thankful for today?

I want Wednesday

Right now...I want to go back to bed! My child usually isn't up before 9:30am at the earliest. Today? No...she was up at 6:50am! Shocked

I want to continue on my mission to get this house cleaned so I can start decorating for Christmas. I have tackled the coat closet, living room, and laundry room so far this week. I think the kitchen is next.

What do you want today? This week?

Make him go away! Part Two

Well, maybe he is gone now. He hung around here all day. Cerdwin really wanted to go outside to play today and the weather was so nice. I hated having to keep her inside because of the dog. He was very friendly, but he had lost his mind chasing all the cats. He would not listen at all. If he wasn't chasing a cat, he was jumping on Cerdwin. When Jason got home around 6pm he didn't see him. I haven't heard any bellowing since about 4 and my dogs haven't been barking. I hope his owners found him. He was a cute dog.

Tackle It Tuesday

Today I am tackling the laundry room! Already listed a variety of items on freecycle that need to go.

****
OK...laundry room has been tackled and taken down! Whoohoo!

Make him go away!

OMG! When we got home last night there was a beagle on our front porch. He won't leave! Has a tracking collar and a name and number on it, but no phone number. I have tried calling the vets offices to ask if anyone had called looking for their dog. No luck there. He is driving my dogs insane and the poor cats are terrified. Every time they move he starts chasing them and bellowing. He needs to go HOME! NOW!

My Tooth!

UGH! My teeth are horrible. I had perfect teeth with no cavities until I was in my early - mid twenties. After several years of battling with severe acid reflex, it took a huge toll on my teeth. All of a sudden my teeth literally started to crumble with no indication there was a problem. I have lost so many teeth because I couldn't afford root canals & crowns. One of my front teeth has been in bad shape for a while and had chipped. Last night a huge chunk came out of my tooth. It looks so bad! I guess I will be calling a dentist on Monday morning in hopes of being able to save it. I just really dread forking out the money to do it. I really just want to get them all pulled and get some falsies. Rolling Eyes

Newsletter time

I finally finished up the newsletter at about 12:30am! I have literally worked on that freaking thing for about 12 hours today. I stopped long enough for some lunch, do a load of dishes, and to fix dinner (aka - toss a pizza in the oven & throw some salad on a plate). It still isn't what I wanted, but I suppose it will do this time. I have learned a great deal of HTML today by trial and error. Laughing I still need to figure out a lot of other stuff. Anyway...I hope you like the look of the newsletter. Next month may not be as fancy schmancy.

I want Wednesday

Can you believe there are only 3 days left until it is November? Did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month? NaNoWriMo is a creative writing project held annually in November in which participants attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. That sounds like something fun to try. However, I don't think I could come up with a creative idea and write enough about to get 50K words. Hmmm....makes me think though. I certainly don't need to take on another project. I can't even keep up with my blog. I think I will try simpler things for November

I want to be able to maintain some focus and get my house cleaned during the month of November so I can decorate for Christmas. I want to be able to pull out all the decor and do it up right since I haven't been able to do that since 2005.

Short term, this week I want to finish cleaning my bedroom and have a fun Moms Night Out this coming Sunday.

What do you want to accomplish in November?

What do you want this week?

Lessons in laundry detergent

I recently had one of those "light bulb" moments. It just hit me that the bottle of laundry detergent was nearly empty and I had just bought it. I looked at the bottle and it reads 32 loads. No way had we done nearly that many loads of laundry. Given there are 3 adults and 1 child in our house hold, we do 12-15 loads each week. I looked at the back of the bottle and the directions explain how much of the liquid to use. It is approximately 1/2 of the cap full for normal loads and about 3/4(1.9oz) of the cap for large loads. Makes sense now! All 3 of us had been filling the cap to the brim. We had used Charlie's Soap liquid for a while before switching to the powder. Since I had to stop using Charlie's Soap, I have been using All Free Clear. Charlie's Soap liquid directions call for 2 ounces...so why wouldn't other brands call for the same amount? Well, apparently they do. We have just been pouring money down the drain, literally. Why did it take me so finally realize this?
I guess it is kind of like other things...we just don't read the instructions that come with so many items.

I want Wednesday

We will be driving to High Point today. I do not like that town! I get lost every time I go. Considering I have only been there about 6 times in my entire life and I have a really good sense of direction, I hope this trip is less stressful. I just want to have fun!

Pumpkin Carving

I know this thing is going to rot before Halloween, but Cerdwin drove me nuts until we carved it.

......

Enthusiasm is contagious; start an epidemic.

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful that I was able to sleep get more than 4 hours sleep and no bad dreams last night.

What are you thankful for this Thursday?

Pumpkin Bread/Muffins

Cerdwin wanted to make banana bread yesterday but we had no bananas. She suggested apple bread, but the internet was down at the time so I couldn't search for a recipe. Yes...I am that bad. I probably have 30+ cook books, but was too lazy to dig through them.

It dawned on me that I had some canned pumpkin and an easily accessible cookbook with a recipe. I was scraping the bottom of the flour bin just to get enough. Note to self: Buy flour on the next grocery shopping trip. She helped measure and mix and had to taste test each and every ingredient. Other shopping list items would be fresh spices. I only have one loaf pan so we made a dozen muffins too. It is so wild that the loaf of bread and the muffins have a really different taste. The muffins are much better. Of course, none of it is going to waste that's for sure!

Since my camera is on the fritz and the closest one handy was Cerdwin's Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera, the picture is kind of fuzzy.

Pre-K/Head Start Decisions

It has been a strange weather week around here. Rainy, cold Monday, blue skies and nearly hot Tuesday, frigid, rainy Wednesday. Today I am terming it Gloomy Thursday.

Between my nerves and Cerdwin's interest we have decided we are going to try a public Pre-K(Head Start)program if an opening comes up. All the schools remotely close to us do not have any openings right now. I had an appointment on Tuesday to fill out the application to get her on a waiting list. When we arrived on time for the appointment the person we were to meet with had left for the day. I was not a happy camper. I was able to get the paperwork that took me nearly an hour to fill out.

I just really don't see that some of those questions asked are necessary. I understand the initial applicants with what is perceived as the highest need are the first get accepted into the program. We are not a family struggling from week to week to put food on the table, facing eviction from our home, or without medical insurance and care. I know we have a number of families in our community in those situations. I wouldn't want those children to miss out on an opportunity to get the benefits from Head Start just because my nerves are on edge and I need a break. I feel like some of the questions are prying into our personal lives more than I want.

The papers are filled out and all the necessary documents are gathered to complete the application. I just haven't made up my mind if I really want to go through with it. I am so torn over this decision. While I am at my wits end with our day in and day out struggles, I love having her at home with me too. I think she would probably like going to school because she is a very sociable child. Her sleep schedule is going to take a major hit though. She is not an early morning person at all. Having to be at school by 8:30am is going to be tough. Even if I go ahead and turn in the application there are no guarantees that she will get in. She will be on a wait list until there is an opening. I could still choose not to send her at that point. What a difficult decision!!!!

Dinner with Family

Tuesday turned out to be a beautiful day. Cerdwin and I went to the inlaws for the afternoon. She was able to spend some time playing with her 12 year old cousin when he got there after school. My mother-in-law was able to get a break from staying with her mother. Cerdwin and I went to dinner with Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Erinn, and Cousin Cameron. Unfortunately, Jason was not able to join us. He turns into a pumpkin if he isn't in bed by 9pm during the week.

Since my sister-in-law lives in Clemmons. She had suggested that we go to the All-You-Can-Eat Pizza Buffet at The Brick Oven in Clemmons. Whoohoo! I am all in for pizza. The place was packed. Every time a new pizza came out, one of us would make a mad dash for it. If somebody didn't, it would all be gone before you could blink an eye. We ended up riding over to SIL's house and hanging out for a little while. I have not been to her house in 7 years. I just realized that!

Some years ago, after work we all would go to the inlaws for Wednesday night Spaghetti dinner. It was always a great time. I want us to get together as a family more often, Jason included.

Heads or Tails Tuesday

The theme/prompt for THIS week, October 6, is:

HEADS - "Build"

Make any kind of post using any form of the word "Build."

I would love to build a place that would be just for moms & kids to come hang out and fun. It would have safe and age appropriate play areas for kids with indoor & outdoor play equipment. WiFi, great ambiance, comfortable seating, delicious beverages, and snacks would be a must.

Give Me 5 Monday

Give Me Five things you would do, if money were no object.

1) Make sure that all of my family & friends were debt free.
2) Take long vacations around the world.
3) Move to a tropical place.
4) Make donations to a variety of NPOs, charitable organizations, and research groups including The March of Dimes, Susan G. Komen, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Mommies Network .
5) da Vinci Veneers

Manic Monday

Manic Monday

Do you read an actual print newspaper? If so, how often? Only on occasion. Maybe once or twice a month.

What is your main source of news? As sad as it may be The Today Show & WXII News 12.

Do you believe that it's possible for the media to be unbiased? No.

Week 6

We are into Week 6 of Homeschooling. It has been a rough road so far. We took two weeks off because we went to the beach for a week and the following week was just down time and trying to get back on track.
This weeks lessons include:
Math - Ordinal Numbers
Language Arts - The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Social Studies - The Pledge of Allegiance
Science - Observation

We are starting to mix in a few Halloween Themed manipulatives to aid our studies. One of my favorites so far is Ordinal Numbers Pumpkin Folder Game from KidSoup. We are going to make a Potato Creature, but I think it could loads of fun to use a small pumpkin if I can find one before we get around to the Top & Bottom portion of the lesson.

The leaves are really starting to change colors so that is going to be great for Science Observations this week.

Dixie Classic Fair 2009

We went to the Dixie Classic Fair with friends this year. It was so much fun. My friend Yvonne's husband got some great photos of our girls having a blast on the rides and eating some yummy food. One of my favorite treats this year had to be the deep fried Snickers bar. OMG! That is just heavenly.

First Day of School

The first day & starting our new curriculum didn't go off without a hitch. I was hoping to wake up earlier than Cerdwin, get a shower, a cup of coffee, and check my email, DanRiverMommies.com, and get myself ready for the day. Of course that didn't happen. She was up at the crack of dawn and in bed with MeMaw watching cartoons. I woke up around 8am to her screeching because the power went off. We had breakfast and got started on a few things around 9am. By 10am she was ready for a break and wanted to go outside. Who was I to argue? The weather was so pleasant. We stayed outside until nearly 6pm. She played on the swings & slides, climbed trees, shoveled dirt, played in birdseed, rode her bike, and tormented the kittens. I was able to get started reading my new book:

A Witch's 10 Commandments Magickal Guidelines for Everyday Life by Marian Singer

I also nearly finished the other book I have been reading:
Point Blank (FBI Thriller) by Catherine Coulter

We came in to fix something for lunch and took it out on the porch to eat. She and I did a little pruning and cleaning up out around the basement and back porch. Cerdwin got stung by a yellow jacket while on the back porch. She made those bees some kind of angry. One chased us all the way in the house. Somehow I managed to slam the door just in time to catch it in the door jamb. After putting an ice pack on the bee sting and watching Sid the Science Kid, then doing a few activities on Sid's website, I was able to prepare dinner while she watched another cartoon. We went back outside while the meatloaf was in the oven.
All in all it was a good day and she went to bed without much protest. Off to bed for me!

When was the last time...

you cleaned the top and behind your refrigerator?

YUCK! I did it yesterday. I found lots of interesting things under and behind the fridge. And my gosh...the wall behind it was scary. Mind you, we live in a log house with rough hewn logs. Everything clings to them, but this gave a whole new meaning to dust bunnies. More like dust kangaroos!

Along with that, I cleaned out the "medicine" cabinet in the kitchen. Shocked Everything in that cabinet had been expired for at least a year or more. Shocked All that clutter just taking up space. I am on a mission. I am determined to de-clutter this house. Even if it is one cabinet or drawer at a time.

Good deed for the day

Thursday afternoon(8/20) Cerdwin and I were going to return some movies and go to the grocery store. We drove by a home on Stewart Road and I noticed a person laying in the driveway. Something just didn't seem quite right about that to me. There was a car behind me so I went on up to the next road and turned around at the first available spot. I waited to see if that other car had stopped, but they didn't. I drove back by the house again and the person was still laying in the driveway, so I turned around and pulled into the driveway. I got out and walked up to the woman. Of course, I asked the most ridiculous question, but I was just looking for and hoping for a response. I asked if she was OK. She opened her eyes and nodded her head to respond no. I asked if anyone else was at home and she said no. I ran back to the van to get my cell phone and had to go out to the road to look for the address on the mailbox. I called 911 and stayed with the woman until the first responders and ambulance arrived. Poor Cerdwin was in the van screaming bloody murder. I did go back and open the doors so she could get some air because it was so hot and I had turned the van off. She was begging to get out. She unbuckled her seat belt, but she stayed in her seat the whole time. I was so proud of her for actually listening to me for once!
While we were waiting to leave since we were blocked in, of course the inquisition started. Where are they taking her? Why is the motor so loud on the ambulance? What is wrong with her? What happened to her? Did the dog bite her? Is she going to be alright? What is wrong with her? What is wrong with her? I couldn't give her a definitive answer about what was wrong with the woman so she kept asking over and over. I really don't know what was wrong with the woman. She appeared to be having some sort of seizure because her body was shaking all over, but she was semi-alert and responsive.
We made an unplanned stop at the library and hung out for a while before heading on to get groceries. It gave her a chance to settle down and enjoy herself for a while. When I went back by the house on the way home the front door was still open and nobody else appeared to have been there since we left. I stopped at the neighbor's house to ask if they knew the woman. They were clueless. A bunch of young "adults" who had just moved in and didn't know anyone or anything.

Lost in High Point

Once again, I got lost in High Point! I do not like that town at all. Cerdwin and I made a trip to High Point to visit my friend Cheri and her son Gabe. Cerdwin had been begging for a couple of weeks to see Gabe. Since they have moved from King, it makes it a little more difficult to just swing by for a visit. After driving around for at least 45 minutes, I finally spotted the street sign. It was camouflaged by tree limbs and leaves from one direction. We visited for about 2 hours and Cerdwin had fun playing with Gabe and the other kids. The next time we go to visit them, they will probably be in another place and I will have to go on another trek around that horrid town.

Lesson Plans

The more I look at things, the more frazzled I get. While I am completely opposed to a "boxed curriculum", I am finding it rather overwhelming to make any concrete decision. I have read more about different approaches to homeschooling. Based upon how Cerdwin reacts to the different materials I have been "testing" her with over the past week or so, I really think we need to use an unschooling approach. I am going to try to just follow her lead for a while and see how it goes. Even though I am trying to follow standards outlined for Kindergarten skills, we certainly have plenty of time. Some days we might sit at the table, others at the computer, and others will be spent exploring outside the house and traveling to other places.
Tuesday's efforts proved to be somewhat frustrating for us both at times. I gathered information from Lesson Pathways for Math, Science, History(Social Studies), and Language Arts. She and I worked through the Science lesson-we created a Science Notebook.(http://www.squidoo.com/interactive-notebook) This proved to be a fun and satisfying lesson for her. She consistently looks forward to science related studies.
Our Social Studies lesson was a bit more of a challenge. Our focus was the community where we live. The suggested pathway was to create a map of our community which would involve a considerable amount of drawing. Her pencil/pen/marker skills are still somewhat lacking and she tends to avoid anything that requires much effort in that area. I decided to steer in a little different direction. We chose to list her favorite places to travel, how we get there, and what we see on the way. She and I got a lot of giggles and smiles from this method.
Language Arts included reading the story: The Princess and the Pea. She dressed up in a costume as the princess, gathered lots of pillows, blankets, and her "lucky rock" which played the part of the pea. I, of course, was designated as the prince. She acted out the part of the princess and climbed upon the huge pile of pillows and of course she could feel that "pea"! We danced and had a wedding. We will continue this week on the pathway outlined using this story.
The math lesson was left to Jason when he got home from work. Unfortunately, that one got pushed back. It involved going outdoors on a nature hunt. He was in no mood to go back out in the heat. Instead, she played some games online to hone in on some number recognition skills.
Later, she played some games on the Wii with Jason.
I am exhausted, but feel like we both gleaned much from our experiences today. Tomorrow is a new day and I think we will travel to a new destination.

The Weekend Was a NIGHTMARE

Where to begin...since we are usually on the go all the time, I suppose I can chalk some of it up to cabin fever. However, the unacceptable behaviors started long before the weekend. We just happened to discover them on Saturday. Cerdwin had been invited to attend a birthday party on Sunday. We told her she had to clean her bedroom and playroom to have that privilege. Woe is me for starting that battle. Jason and I ended up in the playroom going through everything. First discovery was that she had decided to use her "playhouse washing machine" as a toilet. Yep. Full of dried urine! As we were going through things we found some strange stick substance all over some toys and DVD cases. Apparently that was lip gloss. The straw that broke the camels proverbial back though was when I started going through the toy box. I thought I smelled pee. Sure enough when I started picking up some of the toys they were wet! UGH! I went berserk. I had to throw a large number of toys in the garbage because they were saturated with urine.
We ended up bagging up 3 garbage bags full of toys to give away, quite a few items to put on craigslist, and two bags full to just toss. The options are now very limited in the playroom. Hopefully, that will make things much more manageable and less overwhelming for Cerdwin. All DVDs have been put in our bedroom. When she wants to watch one in the playroom she has to come ask for it and return it before getting another. So far that has been working pretty well. She has also been able to keep the playroom cleaned up fairly well without a huge battle.
Unfortunately, Mommy had to suffer the consequences of the bad behavior and stubbornness of the 4 year old. I was looking forward to going swimming after the birthday party. Boo hiss!
The battles continued through Sunday night. Monday was a much better day.
We started with some lessons on http://www.time4learning.com/ and this was a great experience. She seems to be enjoying the lessons, though at times they seem to move a little too slow for her. Even at bedtime we were able to review some of the things she had worked on as we were reading bedtime stories. It still to be seen if the $19.95/month subscription to the site will be worth our money, but we are giving it a try.
I am still trying to put together a curriculum for her to start on for Kindergarten. I have found several incredible websites. The resources from them are infinite! I just have to keep from being overwhelmed with them all and be rather discerning about which ones Cerdwin sees. She wants to try them all!
The top 3 for us so far are:
Time 4 Learning
Internet 4 Classrooms
Lesson Pathways

Today is a new day and we are going swimming at GG Carter's with some friends. So far it has been relaxed. Let's hope it continues.

Aven's Corner

I received an email about this a long time ago, but didn't actually look into it. I found the link to http://www.avenscorner.com on another site today. Cerdwin has been playing the games and having lots of fun with it. There is an error message that pops up sometimes when going to the games but if you just click OK it goes on and I haven't seen any problems. The games are cute and help with learning mouse skills too.

Hello,
My name is Billy Collins. I am the creator of http://avenscorner.com, a free online preschool and educational game website specifically designed for children with spectrum disorder. I started this site to help my son Aven who was recently diagnosed with ASD. He has responded to the games very well. I think some of the visitors or members of your group would enjoy the content at Aven's Corner. Would you be willing to link to our site? I would be happy to post a reciprocal link to your site on my home page.
Thanks, I hope your site continues to grow!

Great article on resiliency

http://www.divinecaroline.com/22189/53715-resiliency--handy-habit-mind

How resilient are you? Do you stress over the "big picture" or just the little stuff, all of it or none of it?

Wildflowers

I happened upon these photos taken of the wildflowers in Namaqualand in South Africa. Namaqualand is quite popular with both local and international tourists during early springtime, when for a short period a normally arid area becomes covered with a kaleidoscope of color during the flowering season. They are so gorgeous and cover the land as far as the eye can see. I wish I could have a field of flowers this beautiful.

Sandwich Thins

I had never even seen these things until a couple of weeks ago when I was at a baby shower in VA. I found them at Sam's Club this week and we are loving them. I am looking forward to making some breakfast sandwiches with them.

Going to the drive-in again

We decided to give the Eden Drive-In a try to see Aliens in the Attic and Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince.
It might be a while before we head back to the Eden Drive-In. Don't get me wrong. It is nice. I like the grassy parking areas and the fact that they have larger restroom facilities than the Bright Leaf in Mt. Airy. However, they have a playground down by the screen and DD nearly drove us insane wanting to go play. DH took her to play and thank goodness I stayed by the van. He said that thing was a hazard. They also have someone walking around selling glow in the dark things that look like light sabers. UGH!
We made DD take a nap that afternoon before we went. It didn't help much. She did OK through the first movie - Aliens in the Attic. By the time the second movie started: Harry Potter, she was pretty tired and starting to get on my nerves. She was doing whatever she could to try to stay awake. It was also really humid Saturday night. The heat was not bad, but the humidity just made me feel nasty.
Someone had told me they liked the Bright Leaf in Mt. Airy better than the Eden Drive-In. I didn't ask their reason. After going to both of them, I think I agree. Aesthetically Eden is more appealing. However, we were more comfortable at the Bright Leaf.
You can't beat the prices to see 2 new release movies!
Eden: 6-Adult $5 each. 5 & under is FREE.
Bright Leaf: 11-Adult $6 each. 4-10 yrs $3. Under 4 is FREE.

You never know what they will say!

A fellow "mommie" shared this story about her 5 year old son. I got a good chuckle!
On Tuesday night my son spent the night at my moms. We'll my mom spent a while on the phone with her mother, my grandma, talking about a serial killer. This morning, He was eating his Cocoa Pebbles and told my mom she needed to hide the cereal, she asked him why and he said "So the serial killer doesn't get it!".
Laughing

The Purple Cow

We made an afternoon trip up to Ridgeway, VA to have some pizza and ice cream at The Purple Cow. Of course we had to wander around the zoo to feed the animals.

When is it OK...

for kids to run around naked?
I have read a few things on this subject in the past couple of weeks from a variety of sources. The most recent is this one:

The little domestic goddess

helped make deviled eggs and brownies today. She absolutely loves to help in the kitchen. The first thing she always says is, "I'll get the eggs!" no matter what we are making. She loves to crack eggs. Today she had fun peeling the hard boiled eggs. I had to fight her from eating them. She likes hard boiled, deviled, egg salad, scrambled...you name it. She likes eggs.

Going to see Makaela

My friend's daughter is moving to Virgina to live with her day for her Senior year of High School. This has brought much grief for my friend, my daughter, and myself. We are going to miss her so much! For 3 days all I have heard is I want to go see Makaela before she leaves. She is moving far, far away and I won't get to see her for a long time. Well, we finally get there today with the going away basket that Cerdwin had packed with some goodies for Makaela. It was like pulling teeth to get her to take pics or even give Makaela a hug. Rolling Eyes We are going to miss Makaela so much, but we hope she does well with her move.

Twist on one of the Kraft recipes

The recipe was for south-of-the-border chicken and pasta skillet. I didn't have any chicken thawed, but had some ground beef. So this is how it goes:

2 cups medium-size pasta, uncooked
1 lb. ground beef browned
2 cups salsa
12 oz. canned corn
4 oz. (1⁄2 of 8-oz. pkg.) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, cubed
1 cup Kraft Mexican Style Finely Shredded Four Cheese, divided

Cook pasta as directed on package.
meanwhile, brown ground beef in large nonstick skillet.
Add salsa, corn, cream cheese; simmer on medium-low heat 6 min. or until corn is heated through and cream cheese is melted, stirring ocasionally.
Drain pasta; add to skillet with half the shredded cheese. Simmer 3 min. or until heated through. Top with remaining shredded cheese; cover. Remove from heat; let stand 5 min. or until cheese is melted.

The original recipe called for 1/4 tsp. of ground cumin. I am not found of that spice, so I omitted it. Also I didn't have any frozen corn so I used canned.

This was absolutely awesome!!!!!

Bee Sting

AAAGGGHHH! I was stung by a red wasp yesterday as I was getting mail from the mailbox. That thing nailed me but good! My hand is still extremely swollen and the itch has set in. I think that is the first time I have ever been stung by a wasp that was alive. I have stepped on a few dead ones. The pain has subsided some, but it hurt so bad all day yesterday that it felt like it was broken. The pharmacist at CVS told me to just take some Benadryl and put ice on it. There must be a better solution! Evil or Very Mad

Mommy how do you...

get a penny out of someone's tummy? That is our question of the morning!
Why? Did you swallow a penny?
No.
Then why did you ask that question?
I did swallow a penny.
When?
While you were sleeping.
I don't know how you get a penny out of your tummy.
Well, think about it!

OK...she is breathing ok and we are going to get something drink and eat to be sure she can swallow with no problems. If that goes well, I think I will hold off on calling the doctor's office. I know they would probably just send us for X-rays to determine where the penny is and just wait for it to pass.

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Cerdwin and I saw Ice Age 3 - Dawn of the Dinosaurs on Friday afternoon with Grandma and cousin Cameron. The Grand Theatre - University Parkway in Winston-Salem is a great theatre for the kids. We loved the movie and of course Cerdwin had to have popcorn and Care Bear Gummies!

Big Bang Boom Party Band

We had a blast hanging out with some DanRiverMommies and their kids at the Walkertown Library to see Big Bang Boom's free concert. Nothing like seeing a bunch of toddlers - 2nd graders jamming out in the mosh pit!
The AC wasn't working in the library so they provided ice pops for the kiddos.

About Big Bang Boom Band:
Big Bang Boom is a pop/rock music group from Greensboro. After 20 years touring clubs and playing parties, Chuck Folds (younger brother of Ben Folds) and Steve Willard decided to expand their horizons and play for parents who have had enough of Barney, The Wiggles, and Kidz Bop. They have since been joined by drummer Eddie Walker. Big Bang Boom is kids music with a pop sensibility, really aimed more at being something that parents enjoy and feel good about letting thier kids listen to....DON'T PASS THIS OVER JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS!!!

Big Bang Boom is also designed to give parents an alternative birthday party option. There is some good quality children’s music being recorded these days. You can catch it on any kid-friendly TV stations, but you can rarely see it live, and now you can.

Big Bang Boom plays some children’s favorites as well as their own original songs for kids. So check ‘em out, bring your young rockers to a show- or have them perform at any event where kids are ready to be kids!

Chuck Folds currently plays bass in Rubberband (http://www.myspace.com/rubberbandentertainment), a popular east coast private party band. Steve Williard plays guitar and sings with Rubberband, and when he isn’t playing other people’s music he writes his own style of rock n’ pop. If you are interesting in hearing any of that, check out Chuck Folds Five (http://www.myspace.com/chuckfoldsfive).

First family trip to the drive-in

We decided at the last minute to go see Transformers
: Revenge of the Fallen at Bright Leaf Drive-In in Mt. Airy. Awesome sound & visual effects. It was so cool sitting in the back of the van with the surround sound.

UP was the 2nd feature. It was a really cute movie. Probably even better in 3-D.

This was the first time either Jason or I had been to the drive-in in 30+ years. Cerdwin's first trip and she was like a worm on hot coals. We took her lawn chair, but not one for either of us. We weren't exactly comfy sitting in the back of the van but it was OK. Next time we will take some chairs. We turned the van around and sat up front to watch UP.

It was a really late night/early morning. We didn't get home until about 3am. Jason & Cerdwin are both still snoozing at 12:15. We had a fun night though!
